The La Gamba Biological Station is run by the University of Vienna, Austria, and provides an ideal facility for an 'in situ' Symposium on orchid bees. It has both comfort and athmosphere being situated in a large tropical garden full of euglossophilous plants adjacent to primary and secondary rain forest.
It is ~25 km from Golfito (see map below) and can be reached easily from San Jose using one of the following options:
Option PUBLIC BUS:
TRACOPA has several buses departing from San José each morning bound for Golfito or Paso Canoas. Tickets can be purchased in advance using the Passer application for the route from San José to Río Claro. We recommend choosing the coastal route (“Costanera”), which is faster than the mountain route (“Cerro de la Muerte”).
You should get off the bus before Río Claro at Villa Briceño (better known as “kilómetro 37”) and take a taxi (US$10–12) to Estación Tropical La Gamba. To ensure the bus stops at km 37, you may need to remind the driver in advance; otherwise, you could end up in the town of Río Claro.
For those traveling from San José to La Gamba on the morning of August 5, there is an option to take a specific TRACOPA bus departing from the bus terminal at 6:30 a.m., which is expected to arrive at km 37 shortly after noon. Although this is a regular public bus, it will provide an opportunity for participants to travel together.

Option DOMESTIC FLIGHT
The airline Sansa offers regular flights from San Jose (Juan Santamaria Airport, SJO) to Golfito (US$ 140 one way with 14kg checked luggage and 4.5kg hand luggage). Flight time is one hour with daily departures at 5:30am, 10:30am and 2:10pm.
Taxi from Fleur de Lys to the airport (JSO) US$ 30 (1-3 persons) / Private Transfer US$ 46 (1-10 persons).
Take a taxi (US$ 25) from Golfito to the 'Estacion Tropical La Gamba'.
